PRESS RELEASE:

SUSSEX - This past weekend over 160 athletes from Atlantic Canada gathered at Poley Mtn in Waterford, near Sussex for the final race weekend of the Atlantic Cup series. It was also the weekend for NB Alpine to name their NB Cup winners and announce the development team for the Canada Winter Games alpine event along with coaches and staff for the games.

For the NB Cup, in the K1 (11-12 yr olds) women, Julie Oullette from Mont Farlagne took top honours, Poley Mtn’s Evynn Topolonski was second and Marissa Arseneau also of Mt Farlagne was third.

On the men’s side for K1, top honours for NB Cup went to Micheal Leger of Crabbe Mtn, while in second place was Jonathan Verret of Mt Farlagne and in third, also from Crabbe Leland Morehouse.

Leila Beaudoin of Mt Farlagne took home top NB Cup spot for the K2 women (13-14 yr olds); teammate Gabrielle Ouellette was seond while Michelle Levesque of Crabbe placed third.

For K2 men, Andrew McLean of Poley Mtn was first, team mate Neil Symington was second and Willem Slauenwhite of PEI rounded out the top three.

It was a Crabbe Mtn sweep for the J1 (15-16 year olds) women’s category, Cathleen Trafton took first, Bess Teague was second and in third place, Lillie Coolen.

On the men’s side of J1 Crabbe Mtn’s Lincoln Esau and Henrik Tonning placed first and third respectively, with PEI’s Jackson Slauenwhite taking second place.

For the women’s J2 (16-17 yr olds) Nicola McLeod of PEI was first.

It was Sebastien Pacey-Smith of Crabbe Mtn taking top honours for the NB Cup men’s J2 category, team mate Phillip Soicher was second and Mike Byrne of Poley Mtn was third.

For the Atlantic Cup series, Crabbe Mtn Race Club took top team honours for the season. In individual categories, K1 women, Julie Ouellette of Mt Farlagne was first, team mate Marisssa Arseneau was second and Poley Mtn’s Evynn Topolinski was third.

Also this past weekend, NB Alpine named its development team for the Canada Winter Games 2011. Coach for the team is Mike Clarke, John Teague is wax technician and team manger is Stephanie Dodge. The athletes were named from the top 10 in the K2, J1 and J2 age categories with exceptions given to injured athletes and athletes attending alpine ski academies out of province. There were also a handful of K1 racers who were invited to the team. The final team of five women and men with one alternate each will be decided in Dec 2010 or Jan 2011 at a derby planned for Crabbe Mtn.

Right now we're sitting at -0.9C here at the mountain. Snowmaking is scheduled to start up again on Upper King's Horn as soon as temperatures permit. More good news is that there is a ton of snow here at Crabbe and we're open with 25/26 trails and glades open for daytime skiing and riding! - SB

PS. Not sure what's up with the forecast on the weather station. It's saying precipitation coming. I see sun peaking through the clouds up here.

It's really great to hear the clunk of ski boots in the Lift Ticket Office. We're open until 9pm. It's chilly out, but if you dress for it, it's some pretty good skiing and snowboarding out there. Salomon SAS has decided to carry out a voluntary and precautionary recall of the toe pieces of the below listed models of Salomon-branded ski bindings. The ski binding models subject to the recall were produced between July and October 2008.

In certain circumstances, the toe components of the below listed models may not fully secure the ski boot into the binding, possibly causing the binding to release inadvertently, posing a falling risk to the skier.
Therefore, these binding models must no longer be used until the toe component is replaced.

After a couple of mild days, temperatures are dropping BIG TIME. Even though it's been too mild to make snow, we've had quite a bit of natural snow fall, a little bit at a time over the past couple of days, but it all adds up. Crabbe Mountain Lemonade...

Wow, did Crabbe Mountain Snwomakers ever make a pile of snow overnight on Saturday. After high winds held back snowmaking progress this past Thrusday and Friday... Crabbe Snowmaking Crews were determined to have Dave's Dream open for Sunday with top-to-bottom skiing and riding! AND THEY DID IT! Extremly cold temps overnight allowed them to make a ton of snow in a short period of time, on-mountain staff began grooming and knocking down snow piles around 3pm Satruday and the end result... Today we enjoyed 853ft of vertical, skiing top-to-bottom on Dave's Dream. The trail had variable early season conditions, but when Mother Nature hands us lemons, here at Crabbe, we make lemonade! - SB

There is an update on Crabbe Mountain dot com: "We will be opening Dec.12 & 13 with skiing and snowboarding on the Beginner Hill, this Saturday and Sunday 9am-4:30pm. Lift tickets for the Beginner Hill will be $7 all ages. Snowmaking Crews are doing their best to make snow on Dave's but strong winds are making it difficult to get snow to land on the trail, slowing down their efforts. If the status of Dave's Dream changes we will update right here at Crabbe Mountain dot com." Wind, wind go away! - SB

Crabbe is opening this weekend...

We received all snow from this last storm, but the wind certainly wasn't our friend lastnight. We managed to squeeze 15cm out of the storm, which was desopisted in some wacky ways around the mountain. Some areas have thick coverage while others look a little thin. Groomers have been out packing down the new snow and snowmaking is scheduled to start up as soon as temps drop. Saying that, we will be open this weekend with skiing and riding on the Beginner Hill with the possibility of having Dave's Dream. Dave's is dependant on when we can get snowmaking on the go and how much snow we can get made. Crews have made a lot of snow on the upper part, but the lower section is in need of a man-made snowstorm. Stay tuned, we'll have another update on www.crabbemountain.com shortly after noon hour tomorrow. Before i forget, lastnights storm is a great reminder to get your winter tires on your vehicle ASAP. I got to try mine out lastnight and they worked great! - SB

Snowmakers are dropping a snowstorm on Dave's Dream...

Snowmaking crews have been giving us 110% once again this week. Lastnight was a great night for snowmaking on the Beginner Hill. This morning crews moved all the snow guns to Dave's Dream. Right now, there is an army of snow guns delivering a snowstorm... Fed-Ex and the snow is even landing where they want it to.

Dave's is a long loop and they still have terrain to cover towards chairtop and chair bottom and will likely be shutting down snowmaking later today is preperation for the upcoming storm. Snowstorms generally bring rising temps and high humidity, not good for snowmaking, but until then our crews will continue to bury Dave's Dream. Let's see how tonights storm impacts us! ALL SNOW PLEASE! - SB

Just got word about an Environment Canada Snowfall Warning. I'll post the bulletin below. We're hoping for much lower wind speeds for this storm. Our team of Snowmakers has been going full force dropping a snowstorm on the mountain since Sunday night at 8pm. Last night was an awesome night for snowmaking and tonight is looking even better. Seems to be a weather event in the forecast for Wednesday late evening into the overnight. Here hoping the precipitation is 100% snow here at the mountain. Our new rental shop ski binding calibrator arrived this week.

We had a flooring crew in all day and night yesterday installing new stair treads in the Main Lodge.

More new rubber flooring in the cafeteria.

Needless to say our Snowmaking Crews are back to their Crazy 8's Tournament. Mild and wet here at the mountain today. It's a little colder than in Fredericton up here at the moment. YFC is showing +4C and at mid-mountain we're reading +2C. Let's hope for a short spike in temperature today. - SB

Snowmaking continues here at the mountain. We're planning to make snow into this evening and overnight tonight... after that it's up to the weather.. Thursday is still looking like a tropical storm. Snowmaking officially begins...

The last few weeks have been tropical to say the least. After weeks of playing Crazy 8's our snowmaking crews hauled out snowmaking guns and hoses and prepared for lift off. With everything ready to go, Big Larry and Sasquatch began they're shift at midnight and were making snow by 1am. As i write this (9:15AM) Crabbe Mountain IS making snow! Temps didn't get to the forecasted lows and we are battling hig humidity. It's the way she goes. With the current forecast we're not sure how long our window will last, but as of right now the snow guns are cranking out the white stuff. Think Snow and Cold Temperatures! - SB

Snow on the mountain first thing Sunday morning. We had a great crew of dedicated glade thinners up here yesterday. Cut some exits on Hot Dog Glades and did a lot of work on our new Beginner Glades area that runs along the upper Family Trail. Snow here at the mountain AGAIN this morning. Now on the weather, we're slightly frustrated with the forecast at the moment, it's tough to even think about making snow when it's going to be +10C today and the overnight values are well above zero. Oh well, not much we can do about the weather. The last two seasons have been great for early season snow, our fingers are crossed that the weather will shift and maybe we can have some of the 533cm of snow that has buried Whistler this November. http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/index.htm

Here's some trivia for you. November 2009 Whistler has received 533cm (17.7ft) of snow. Last winter 08/09 Crabbe Mountain received 451cm (15ft) ALL SEASON. Let's hope that storm cycle shifts and heads our way! - SB

What a great day on the mountain yesterday! The project on the clipboard was to do a ton of work to Steve's Drive Thru. We had a great crew on hand, thank you to all who helped! Steve's got brush trimmed top-to-bottom, exits, the lower pitch, mid-skiers left line and lower skiers right line has been thinned out. We are in the clouds up here at the mountain today! Muggy too. Open House is tomorrow 1-4pm. The ladies in the lodge are putting the finishing touches on the inside and the Prinoth truck that delivered our new groomer on Monday is scheduled to be back from Newfoundland to pick up our old groomer and take it away! White Hills in NFLD got a similar groomer (the other groomer on the truck) delivered this week. Truck should be here anytime. We've got the old groomer all taken apart and ready to be put on the flatbed. They tell us it's likely destined for a hydro company, xc ski club or snowmobile club. Can't wait to lay down some smooth corduroy snow with our new BR-350S!!! It's so warm outside, I could probably wear shorts outside the lodge today, but i've got a cruisin' run down the Flume on my mind. - SB

All departments are busy getting ready for the Open House this weekend and opening day (scheduled for Dec. 12, think snow). This time of the year can be quite busy at times. Todd is busy at the mountian recruiting ski & snowboard instructors, as well as working on snow school programs. Bonnie and Diana are getting the Guest Services office ready for the upcoming season. Dustin is busy in the rental shop unpackaging new equipment and Jason and i are both working from town today. We try to book multiple in town meetings, pick ups and drop offs all in the same day. We're both attending a noon hour meeting and then off in different directions this afternoon... meeting up again this evening for ski patrol first-aid class 6:30-9pm. Wednesday we'll be at the mountain. Thursday is another busy one. Got a Fredericton Tourism Attractions Meeting at 2pm, then off the a 4 o'clock, followed by the Mactaquac County Chamber of Commerce AGM 6pm at the Riverside Resort. Today is get stuff done in town day for Jason and myself. We've both got early pickups and drop offs. Then we're heading to Marysville Place at 9:30am for a PNB Wellness Expo for most of the day. After that we've got an afternoon meeting scheduled with PMA, then weekly Ski Patrol Class after supper 6:30pm-9pm. Jam packed day to say the least. - SB

Chilly here at the mountain this am. We're all getting back to the grind after hosting the Atlantic Ski Areas Association AGM end of last week. Great to see everyone from the other mountains in the region and look forward to seeing you again at the spring meeting! BTW, Crabbe GM Jason Crawford banged off a run (skiing) down the first section of the Flume early Friday AM. Hats off to him for claiming first tracks of the 09/10 season. He tells me it was basically skiing down the wheeler path on frozen grass covered with freezing r**n and a few cm of snow at 7am. He was using his rock skis. - SB

This week Crabbe Mountain is hosting the Atlantic Ski Area Association Annual Fall Meetings. Representatives from ski areas all over the Altlantic Region are here to learn about the latest and greatest in the ski & snowboard industy. Environment Canada is calling for snow. Started snowing around 10am here at the mountain. Right now, we seem to be getting freezing mist. Hopefully it turns back around to snow. Our fingers are crossed. - SB

Went to Canadian Tire lastnight and saw the snowblowers lined up outside the main doors. First thought in my head... "Won't be long now!" To do's for skiers/snowboarders: get some efficient snow moving devices. Snowblower, good shovel, snow scoop, put a shovel in the trunk of your car. The quicker you can move snow around your driveway and from under your car... means more fresh snow on powder days! - SB

PS. Speaking of Canadian Tire. Did you know that Canadian Tire runs the Jumpstart Program? Great program that helps kids in financial need participate in sport and recreation... including skiing and snowboarding. Crabbe Mountain participates in the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program each season.

This time of the year is a busy time for the Crabbe Mountain Ski Patrol and this weekend was no different. Patrollers spent the weekend here at the mountain training and upgrading their first-aid training with the Canadian Ski Patrol System. What a great crew of patrollers we have at the mountain. Jason (since 1996) and I (since 1994) continue to participate in Ski Patrol training and testing each season to keep up with the latest in snow safety, first aid & rescue techniques. - SB

It seems summer has finally arrived, ironically at the same time we started doing our annual maintenance here at the mountain preparing for winter. Go figure. Don't get me wrong we are lovin' it up here. Nice weather means we can get a lot done and hopefully get ahead of schedule. We do have a lot on our plate over the next few months.

The other morning while enjoying my coffee I watched mama fox and her two babies out playing on the Beginner Hill. The babies were too cute as they wrestled and played in the newly cut grass.

New standards for ski helmets introduced - article...

Skiers and snowboarders wondering what helmet can best protect them from head injuries will soon be able to buy ones tested and approved by the Canadian Standards Association.

The CSA developed a new standard for alpine skiing and snowboarding helmets last June and will begin providing testing for certification of the protective headgear next month, said John Walter, vice-president of standards for the non-profit organization.

"This is the first such standard in Canada … specifically developed to meet the needs of Canadians by Canadians," Walter said Monday. "These helmets are meant to sustain multiple impacts, where a number of helmets that are manufactured are only supposed to [take] one severe fall and they should be thrown out and another one purchased."

The move means that manufacturers of alpine ski and snowboard helmets will have to submit them to be tested at an accredited laboratory before they can put the CSA mark on their helmets. But manufacturers are under no obligation to submit to testing.

That's why Liberal MP Hedy Fry recently tabled a private member's bill that would require non-CSA approved snow sport helmets to be banned under the Hazardous Products Act. She is urging the Conservative government to fast-track the bill through a Governor-in-Council order.

Currently, alpine ski and snowboard helmets are "self-certified" by manufacturers to American and European standards. In Canada, there are no requirements for helmets to meet any standard and some helmets may offer little protection at all.

The CSA is to formally announce its certification testing Tuesday, less than a week after actress Natasha Richardson died from a brain injury she sustained from a fall while at Quebec's Mont Tremblant ski resort. She was not wearing a helmet.

Walter said the announcement had been planned for about two months, but he acknowledged that Richardson's tragic death has made the issue of protection from head trauma even more timely.

"You hear people say, 'I wouldn't have worn a helmet before, but I will now.' So obviously that kind of attention will help people be aware that they need to wear a helmet."

Traumatic brain injury is the main cause of death among skiers and snowboarders, according to an international review published in 2007 in Injury Prevention, a peer-reviewed journal. Other research has shown that helmets used for skiing and snowboarding are associated with a 60 per cent reduction in head injuries.

Lots of soft snow here at Crabbe. It snowed all day today and tomorrow is supposed to be a wicked nice day! On top of great skiing and riding Flat Top is playing in The Thirsty Boot Lounge for Apres Ski 2-6pm and there's also an Alpine outdoor beer garden planned for 1-5pm with Matchstick Mike. The Weather Network is calling for +6C and variably clouds, sounds like a great day to ski! - SB

Took advantage of yesterday's warm weather to slap a new Crabbe Sticker on the car. We had a perfectly sunny warm day until about 4pm yesterday, then clouds rolled in and things got dark. Some light r**n overnight and before dawn things were below freezing again. At 7am, there were flurries in the air and when the lifts started turning it was snowing pretty hard. Conditions overnight were too soft and wet to groom, temps have dropped since then and the snow is pretty firm. Look for conditions to be hard until we get a bunch of new snow. Our crews will be out tonight slow tilling our groomed trails in an effort to try to soften things up. No worres, there's a huge amount of snow at Crabbe Mountain. There's even some snow in the forecast early this week. Let's hope it's a big one! - SB

Well that was quite the snowstorm Sunday/Monday... 55cm of light fluffy snow, or 22 inches! But who's counting, right? Anyone who skied Tuesday would agree, biggest powder day in a really long time! Pug's was waist deep, Harold's and Norm's seemed like you were Cat Skiing. Such an epic day and we thank everyone who took the morning off work to come ski & ride some of the lightest, deepest powder we've seen at Crabbe in a long time. This put's our Snow-to-Date Total to over 10ft this season. Did I hear more snow on Sunday? - SB

Congrats Ski Racing Club...

The host Crabbe Mountain Ski Racing Club enjoyed a medal fest at the Altantic Cup series of races held on the weekend at the Lower Hainsville facility.

Skiers from the local club earned 24 medals overall in the competition which featured 70 alpine ski racers between the ages of 13-20 from the Atlantic region.

Competition was held in each of super giant slalom, giant slalom and slalom disciplines.

When it was all said and done, Lincoln Esau was the most decorated of the Crabbe Mt. competitors with four golds competing in the K2 (13-14 years of age) division. He also garnered a bronze as the third fastest competitor overall.

Philip Soicher earned three gold medals and a bronze competing in the J2 (ages 17-18) division. He also won a bronze among the fastest competitors overall in his age bracket.

Cathleen Trafton earned a pair of gold medals, a silver and a bronze medal competing in the K2 girls division. She also won two bronze in the fastest overall competition.

Sebastien Pacey-Smith had a gold and two silver medals in the J2 division and added a gold and a silver for overall fastest within his age category.

Elizabeth Teague added a silver and bronze medal in the J1 (ages 15-16) girls competition.

There is so much new snow at Crabbe right now. This last storm dropped 55cm of light fluffy snow on the mountain. That's 22 inches. Get here early Tuesday for your powder fix. There were a few people out on the mountain today earning their turns. Andy, Lee and Mike hit up Chairline and King's Horn. Then later in the day The Young Family skied the Glades for some freshies. Tony and Sue even went out for a snow shoe. Jay and i also did some earn your turns skiing today. All i can say is wow!!! - SB

Yesterday turned out far better than expected. Mixed precipitation in the morning turned to SNOW by 2pm and it snowed into the evening add a little overnight grooming and the trails are in perfect shape!
Right now there's a film crew here on behalf of NB Tourism, filming Crabbe as part of a winter fun commercial, to be aired on TV next winter. The forecast for Saturday is calling for snow. - SB
